âShe said she would call right after kissing the hell out of me.â I groan. âFranky, I donât know what to do but Iâm giving her time. Thatâs all.â Giving her time sucks but I'm guessing she has her reasons.
She snaps her fingers at my face like Iâm the most stupid man in the world. âIf she hasnât called you in three days, thatâs a bad sign. Sheâs a woman and women donât like to wait. If she was into you as much as you say, there is an issue or misunderstanding.â Franky goes back to her pen and coffee. âIâm just saying.â
âYeah. Iâve been thinking of showing up at the library. If weâre in public... Fuck I donât know but at work, she wonât be able to run away from me.â I donât want to trap her but I would like some answers. There is no way that it was all in my head. The time we spent together, it was real and she said she liked me. Iâm not crazy. Am I?
âUh? Yeah, I guess it might work.â She doesnât seem to be convinced, Iâm not either but I want to know whatâs going on.
Kharis kissed me before letting me go. We were both on the porch of her house, under the gorgeous sunshine. Her hair had some gold highlights reflecting the light and her eyes were so alive and happy. She had her arms around my waist and slid them under my jacket. I let her keep my hoodie because her dress wouldnât keep her warm enough. I held her face in my palm when we kissed, she whimpered and kept kissing me back for more and more. We kissed for a very long time. So much so I was fifteen minutes late at the shelter. It wasnât a casual goodbye kiss, it was a promise and I thought it meant more than that to her.
Damn it. âIâll go check out the library. I have forty-five minutes until my next appointment.â
âBring me back a coffee, will you?â Gav asks.
âSure.â
Driving my car instead of walking, I hurry to the library. Itâs quiet and I donât see Kharis anywhere. Through each row, I look but no Kharis.
âCan I help you, sir?â An old woman startles me.
âNo, um, well yes.â I have to get my shit together. âIâm looking for Kharis. She works here.â
âYou just missed her. She came by an hour ago.â She places a book on the shelf next to me.
âWhen is her next shift?â I need to know and Iâm sure this lady can help me out. She watches me and the ink on my arms and then, the grey-haired woman makes a sad face. âIâm sorry but she wonât be coming back for another few weeks.â What?
âIs she leaving town or something?â
âI canât answer that, Iâm sorry.â
Something doesnât feel right. âCan you tell me if she is okay, at least?â
I can tell I have made the librarian uncomfortable. âMs. Lindell needs all the positive energy she can get at the moment.
